Durer's Rhinoceros

Durer's Rhinoceros

$119.00

Albrecht Durer was given a written description and a rough sketch of a rhinoceros that arrived in Lisbon in 1515.  He never actually saw a rhinoceros, but created the now famous woodcut. Durer ‘s beast seems to be wearing a coat of armor: part fact, part fiction and pure genius.

(This was the first living rhinoceros in Europe since Roman times.  Sadly, it died in a shipwreck in 1516 when being sent as a gift to Pope Leo X.)

Collage with found objects, ink, removable dividers. Great for keepsakes, keys, jewelry, cuff links, or as a desk organizer. Perfect gift for men, women, art history lovers.

9 ½ x 6 ¼ x 3 ½”
